Mexico's culture, very much in tune with land and nature, creates an ideal spot
for growing and harvesting tobacco. One of the prime agriculture centers in
Mexico is the city of Veracruz. This important city produces coffee, vanilla
beans, tropical fruit, corn, cattle and their specialty, Tobacco.
There is a lot of speculation to where the practice of smoking rolled tobacco
came from. Many believe it began with the ancient Mayans. The Mayans would later
pass this tradition onto Native American tribes, who used the leaves for
medicinal purposes. Cigars have been rolled in Mexico since the middle of the
19th century, decades before the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras.
Recently Mexican cigar produces have experimented with a new growing season in
Spring. Moving away from the rainy Mexican summer. Today, the Veracruz Valley
grows three major types of tobacco: a silky smooth Sumatra used for wrappers,
Habana seeds are also used for wrappers and San Andres Negro, a spicy, dark leaf
for filler and a maduro wrapper.
The adaptation and consistent quality of the Mexican leaf is indisputable and
the fact that A. Turrent, a popular cigar brand in Mexico, only uses about 20%
of the tobacco that they grow, proves it. The rest is shipped out to other
countries to use in various blends. The San Andres Negro is used by Macanudo for
their binder and is widely used by other companies for their wrappers, such as
Hoyo De Monterrey.

In the beginning Mexican cigars were puros, produced only with Mexican tobacco for the fillers, binders and wrappers. Mexico could not compete in complexity and richness with cigars from other popular countries. After the trade restrictions were lifted in the mid-1990's, Mexican cigar makers were able to experiment with new flavors and aromas.
A widely used tobacco throughout the world is the Mexican Sumatra. This dark tobacco is used mainly for wrappers, but long fillers and binders are also produce with this tobacco. The finest burning tobacco grown, the Mexican Sumatra gives a distinct, peppery, sweet, mild flavor. Nearly 1.4 million cigars were imported from Mexico into the U.S. last year.
